(Tritcum aestivum) This beautiful ornamental wheat was brought to our attention by ID grower and friend Beth Rasgorshek. At one point fairly common in the commercial trade, it has somewhat fallen off the map of late. Technically six-row spring wheat, and a fairly productive one at that, it is most commonly grown as an ornamental and filler on account of its black-tinted heads and graceful long awns. Holds its color especially well if evenly watered. Harvest for bouquets and wreaths early for the best black color! Our thanks to ID seed saver, Thumbs Heath.
