(Allium cepa) We have been growing this OP shallot for almost 20 years now and for a long time it was the only OP shallot from true seed available. Red-skinned, Dutch-style shallots are on the larger side and very productive. While we find the dutches to be somewhere between storage onions and the famed French grey shallots in flavor, they really put both to shame in storability. Kept in cool, dry conditions, we’ve still been eating the previous year’s crop when it was time to start harvesting the new one.

Growing Info

SOWING:

Sow indoors from late Feb-mid March.

Transplant out 4-6 weeks before the last frost date.

Note: Grow as you would onions.

1/4-1/2"

SPACING:

4-6" spacing in rows 12-18" apart.

EMERGENCE:

7-14 days @ soil temp 60-75F

LIGHT:

Full sun

FERTILITY:

Heavy. Prefers well-drained, loamy, well-balanced fertile soil with a pH between 6.0-7.0.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

Alliums would like you to keep them well-weeded as they are slow-growing and compete poorly.

Shallots, like onions, are sensitive to day-length. Please give them the care you would a long-day onion (latitudes north of 35 degrees).

Shallow-rooted shallots prefer even watering.

Harvest when the tops have fallen over. We sun-cure, placing the bulbs on screens and taking care to cover each one with the next shallots leaves.
