Sunflower, 'Reds'

(H. annuus) A few years in and we’re selecting who stays and who goes in this mix. Selected mainly from the lovely “Moulin Rouge”, these display deep reds all around as well as slightly lighter reds with yellow shining from underneath the petals. For now, they all appear to be sticking to a height of approx. 5-6’ and are multi branching with many displaying the best characteristics of cutting sunflowers. Do expect and enjoy that some simply don’t tow the line. Select what you love and save your own seed for next year or simply share the fall bounty with all the little creatures that call your garden home.

Growing Info

SOWING:

Sow outdoors after your last frost.

Note: Sunflowers are best sown outdoors in full sun. They prefer infrequent but deep watering.

PLANTING DEPTH:

1/2-1"

SPACING:

12-18" in rows 24-36" apart.

EMERGENCE:

7-14 days @ soil temp 70-75F.

LIGHT:

Full sun

FERTILITY:

Average to heavy. Prefer loamy and well-drained, soil and balanced fertility.
Beware of providing excess Nitrogen as this may cause odd flower shapes.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

Tolerant of many soil types.

Attract birds, butterflies, children (who are the best of us), pollinators and small critters of all types.

Sunflowers are heliotropic when young (look it up!), much like many of us in the PNW.

Blooms can be cut from bud to open flower with varying vase life. We like to place them in warm to hot water in a cool shady spot.
